Welcome to Oakton! I am looking forward to working
with you this semester as your History Professor
After completing my Bachelor degree in History
and Anthropology at Loyola University of Chicago, I continued on to my Masters
and Doctoral degrees at the University of Wisconsin Madison. My decision to
complete my doctoral work at UW-Madison was its internationally renowned
African Studies Program. Every imaginable discipline was represented by an
Africa focused faculty member, ranging from African Cultural Studies to Urban
and Regional Planning.
Having been awarded a Fulbright scholarship, as
well as support from the German Academic Exchange (Deutscher
Akademisher Austauschdienst
/ German Academic Exchange Service) DAAD, Padagogische
Austauschdienst (PAD / Academic Exchange Service) and
the Friedrich-Ebert Stiftung (FES) Foundation for Social Democracy, I was able
to complete my Ph.D. thesis on what was German East Africa (modern Tanzania,
Rwanda and Burundi) and published the book Mikono
Ya Damu Hands of Blood
African Mercenaries and the Politics of Conflict in German East Africa, 1888 to
1904.
After completing my doctoral work, I began my career in teaching and research at Elmhurst College here in Illinois. After three years I accepted an appointment as a tenure track professor in History at Oakton College. I have been at Oakton since 2000. What I enjoy most about being here are the students and the small classes, as compared to most four-year universities and colleges. I think that the smaller classes are ideal to creating an excellent learning environment for every student in the class. As far as I am concerned, no matter why you are taking a class, it is my wish to introduce you to the study of History. History is not memorization of names, places and dates, as is so often taught in High School. It is about fascinating people and places that I hope you will visit and see for yourselves. Many of our students are also from the places that we will be studying together. I look forward to working with you this semester.
Above all, I am here to help you succeed in which ever class you are taking with me. If you ever have ANY questions, always contact me, or visit me during my office hours listed on the class syllabus, or at any time, that is what I am here for.

When I was a student at Lincoln Middle School,
Berwyn, Illinois, I did a debate, as part of a speech class, on the
Malvinas-Falklands War of 1982 between Argentina and Great Britain. I
represented e Argentina. This is the letter I received from the Casa
Rosada/Pink House, which is the Argentine President’s office, similar to the
White House in Washington D.C.. I also was invited to meet the Counsel General
here in Chicago. https://cchic.cancilleria.gob.ar/en
As part of the debate, the consulate also let me
borrow the Argentine flag. After this experience, I knew that I wanted to major
in History.
