Oakton Partners with GYO-IL to Champion Diverse Future Educators and Classroom Representation

As a teacher, you can positively impact students, helping shape future generations.
Des Plaines, Ill. (March 18, 2025) – Oakton College is partnering with Grow Your Own Illinois (GYO-IL) and 21 other institutions for the “We See the Teacher in You” campaign. The initiative supports African American/Black, Hispanic/Latino/a/e, and underrepresented individuals in pursuing careers in education.

Through the campaign, aspiring teachers can connect with higher education advisors who will guide them through Illinois’ teacher licensure programs and pathways, including at Oakton. Oakton’s comprehensive Education program, including elementary, secondary, and special education pathways, equips future educators to transfer to licensure programs and meaningfully contribute to classrooms and communities.

“Partnering with GYO-IL on this initiative aligns with Oakton’s Vision 2030 Strategic Plan bold vision of building just and thriving communities,” said Katherine Schuster, Ph.D., co-chair of Anthropology, College Studies, Education, Psychology, Social Science and Sociology (ACEPSS) Department at Oakton. “Through this partnership, we aim to inspire the next generation of educators who reflect the rich diversity of our communities.”

Community leaders, healthcare workers, entrepreneurs, coaches, paraprofessionals and individuals in a variety of other fields bring valuable perspectives to teaching. Individuals interested in the “We See the Teacher in You” campaign can complete an inquiry form at BeTheTeacher.org to be matched with a participating college or university based on their interests. While matching does not guarantee admission, it is an essential first step in navigating the journey to becoming a licensed teacher.

A career in teaching offers the opportunity to shape students’ futures, gain leadership experience, and enjoy benefits such as career growth, pension plans, healthcare coverage and flexible summer schedules.
